About the Position:
This position is assigned Vicksburg District, Corps of Engineers with a variety of deckhand tasks in connection with the making-up and breaking down of tows, dredging, snagging, tending floating plant, revetment construction operations, and channel patrol activities, general maintenance and housekeeping of a floating plant. During the lay-up season, incumbent may be assigned to any River Operations Branch sections or units to serve as a helper or intermediate worker in such trades as painting, welding, electrical repair and maintenance, marine equipment repair, carpentry, pipefitting, etc.

The duty location of this position will be wherever the floating plant is located.

As a Deckhand you will serve on a mat sinking unit assigned to the Vicksburg District. The primary responsibilities of the position include general maintenance work as well as:
Making-up and breaking down of tows.
Operating various hand and small electric tools.
Cleaning the vessel, to include removing garbage, scrubbing decks, and railings.
Assisting other craftsmen with maintenance and repairs.
For this position, the job element method is used to match what you can do against what the work calls for. Your knowledge, skills and abilities will be compared to the knowledge, skills and abilities needed for success. Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element. Your experience will be evaluated through responses obtained from the occupational questionnaire and your resume. SCREENOUT - Ability to do the work of a Deckhand without more than normal supervision which is described as: conducting channel patrol activities, outboard motor operation deck equipment repair, general maintenance and housekeeping on a floating plant.

Physical Effort: The work requires substantial physical effort when handling heavy cables, equipment, and machinery; while making and breaking tows; and when washing, scrubbing, cleaning, chipping, and painting surfaces. Heavy lifting up to 50 pounds may be required. Work may involve long periods of standing, lifting, climbing, crouching and walking.
Working Conditions: Works both inside and outside during a variety of weather conditions and climates, including extremes in heat and cold and heavy rainfall. Workers are exposed to paint fumes, and are subject to cuts and bruises while working with equipment. There is the possibility of eye injury while chipping paint and rust. There is a danger of slipping from floating plant into water with possibility of physical injury or drowning. On-Shore work may involve working in mud, and dirty or cramped situations.

Don't Be Fooled

The fraudster will send a check to the victim who has accepted a job. The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
